Can an Optician Put Prescription Lenses in Sunglasses You Already Own?

BUYING GUIDE

A favorite frame can be a good candidate for new lenses, but a familiar shape is only the starting point. An optical shop needs to assess the actual frame, your prescription and the way the existing lenses are held before it can quote the job.

Bring the frame before ordering lenses

A fine rim crack, worn mounting hole or brittle temple may change the answer. Ask the shop to inspect the front, hinges and mounting points. A frame that still feels comfortable can be difficult to take apart and reassemble safely. Photograph any existing damage so you and the shop have the same starting record.

Ask what the quote covers

Specify the tint, UV specification and any polarization you want. Ask whether the price includes fitting, whether both lenses will be replaced, and what happens if the frame fails during the work. An advertised price for a clear single-vision lens rarely answers all those questions for a tinted or progressive pair.

Compare two complete options

Write down the total for retaining your frame and the total for an equivalent new pair. Include the value of keeping a bridge that already fits, along with the practical question of whether you can do without the frame during fitting. A seller’s photos cannot confirm prescription compatibility. Specsavers on fitting existing frames · How to find the model reference.
