CARE GUIDE

How to clean sunglasses without scratching the lenses

Most tiny lens scratches do not come from “cleaning” itself. They come from rubbing grit across the lens. The safest routine starts by getting loose particles off before you wipe.

1. Rinse away loose debris

If the frame can be safely rinsed, use clean lukewarm water to remove dust, sand, salt, and other particles. Avoid very hot water, which can be hard on some coatings and frame materials.

2. Use a small amount of mild soap when needed

A tiny drop of lotion-free mild dish soap can help remove sunscreen and skin oils. Gently work it over the lenses and frame with clean fingertips, then rinse thoroughly.

3. Dry with clean microfiber

Use a clean microfiber lens cloth rather than a shirt, paper towel, or tissue. Fabric that feels soft can still hold particles or fibers that create fine marks over time.

4. Keep the cloth clean too

A microfiber cloth eventually collects oil and debris. Wash it periodically according to its care instructions and avoid fabric softener, which can leave residue behind.

What to avoid

Do not use household glass cleaner unless the eyewear manufacturer specifically says it is compatible. Ammonia and other strong chemicals can damage certain lens coatings. And never try to polish away a scratch with abrasive compounds: that can permanently alter the optical surface.
